Fashion for Haiti: One Million Hearts

Kara Ross

A collaboration between the Urban Zen Foundation, Council for Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and eBay has brought together nearly 150 designers to support Haitian artisans. Each designer, including 22 jewelers, has personalized Haitian-made papier-mâché hearts that are being auctioned off on eBay from now until May 2 (8am PT). 100% of the proceeds go to the Urban Zen Foundation, founded by Donna Karan, which promotes economic development through job creation and vocational education, helps raise awareness, and highlights the creativity of artisans in Haiti. I’ve posted some jeweler contributions posted, but go to the eBay site to see them all and bid.

Jewelers of America hosted their 11th Annual GEM Awards on January 11 at Cipriani in New York. Honored that evening were Ippolita (Design), Stellene Volandes (Journalistic Excellence), and Matthew A. Runci (Lifetime Achievement Award).

Ippolita is an industry vetern, having begun designing jewelry in 1993, and her signature style is instantly recognizable. She spoke of the influence the Italian crafted culture and her studies in sculpture have had on her designs. Stellene Volandes, style director of Town & Country magazine, is the woman behind the very sumptuous jewelry spreads regularly found in the magazine. You can always count on seeing some dazzling pieces each month! Matt Runci, Jewelers of America’s former President & CEO, was instrumental in the creation of the Kimberley Process later in his career and continues his work in that field.
