Chopard Shines in Diana Movie

Still from 'Diana'.

Still from ‘Diana’.

The much anticipated biopic of Princess Diana’s last years, ‘Diana’, has finally been released and if you are going to see it this weekend, keep an eye out for some fabulous jewels from Chopard. The official jewelry supplier of the film, Chopard was tasked with creating pieces of jewelry similar to those that were part of the princess’ extensive jewelry collection. Not exact replicas, but ‘in the style of’. Several pieces come from the ‘Happy Diamonds’ collection, while others are one-of-a-kinds from the high jewelry collections. It would seem to me that they did a very good job of capturing Diana’s style.

An Epic Heist in Cannes

I don’t know what it is about Cannes this year, but it’s been jewel-thievery central the last few months and Sunday’s was record-setting. In what is now known as France’s biggest jewel theft ever, over US$136 million in jewelry was stolen in broad daylight from an exhibition by Leviev called ‘Extraordinary Diamonds’ at the famed Carlton Hotel along La Croissette. The armed robber walked in alone wearing a hat and face-concealing scarf, apparently through a door that was supposed to be bolted shut, waved a pistol around threatening those in the room, and then proceed to exit through another door with a briefcase full of jewels. Ballsy!

This is immediately being linked with the (also ballsy) recent escape of notorious jewel thief Milan Poparic on July 25, said to be a member of the ‘Pink Panther’ gang. Interestingly, a documentary about the international jewel thieves called “Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers” is set to be released in the US on July 31. Too much of a coincidence??

This follows the two not-small jewelry thefts that happened during the Cannes Film Festival in May of this year. In one instance, the hotel room safe of a Chopard employee containing $1.4 million in jewels was ripped from the wall. A few day later came the second theft straight under the noses of 80 security guards at a star-studded De Grisogono party celebrating the company’s 20th year in business. A special collection for the milestone was modeled and put on display, then at the end of the night, a diamond necklace worth $2.6 million had vanished.

It is notable of course that the famous ‘To Catch a Thief’ movie, starring Cary Grant as a jewel thief, was largely filmed at Carlton Hotel, but this makes me think far more of Ocean’s Thirteen. Perhaps George Clooney & Co. can take some inspiration for another installment?

2013 Chopard Red Carpet Collection

Chopard 2013 Red Carpet Collection Rose Necklace

I’m really late to the party on this one, because it debuted during the Cannes Film Festival back in May, but it’s really lovely so I’m posting about it now anyway. The 2013 edition of Chopard’s Red Carpet Collection, an annual tradition for 15 years, debuted at the 66th Festival and contains 66 pieces. The colorful collection is said to be inspired by all aspects of love, and while their are many dramatic pieces, there are also a lot of whimsical ones. A collaboration with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) has made the collection ‘green’ by using gold that comes from a responsible source. Check out the Chopard Red Carpet Tumblr for tons of great photos.
