On the second-to-last day of Paris Fashion Week there were far fewer shows, but some of the best jewelry so far.
The Chanel show was probably the last bit of evidence anyone needs in order to know that pearls are very much having a moment (don’t forget about the V&A Pearls exhibition!) There were so many great looks: huge asymmetrical necklaces, square cubes on rings, a pearl-encrusted ‘Lego’ bag with a pearl strap (very reminicent of the Thakoon look that was so popular). I’m going to go ahead and predict that these pieces will be all over the March 2014 fashion magazines.
A mish-mash of cultural references and a whole lot of gold were on display at both Valentino and Alexander McQueen. In the case of Valentino there was a mystical quality with the zodiac symbols and scarbs, while at McQueen it was more of a warrior princess vibe.
Also continuing with the gold was Valentin Yudashkin in 80’s big earring splendor and an interesting idea from Jean-Charles de Castelbajac: wearing a necklace under the sheer layer of a dress. Love it.
