12 special rings have been added to the ‘Liens’ (or ‘ties’) collection from Chaumet and this time it’s all about cool blue stones. The fine jewelry house has been using the criss-crossing motif for many years and it has become a symbol for the company. In July they debuted these particular haute joaillerie pieces which feature only white diamonds and blue sapphires, tanzanite and tourmaline. I’m calling third from the top my favorite because the center stone looks like it’s floating and you just can’t beat that color. Gorgeous.
I don’t know what it is about Cannes this year, but it’s been jewel-thievery central the last few months and Sunday’s was record-setting. In what is now known as France’s biggest jewel theft ever, over US$136 million in jewelry was stolen in broad daylight from an exhibition by Leviev called ‘Extraordinary Diamonds’ at the famed Carlton Hotel along La Croissette. The armed robber walked in alone wearing a hat and face-concealing scarf, apparently through a door that was supposed to be bolted shut, waved a pistol around threatening those in the room, and then proceed to exit through another door with a briefcase full of jewels. Ballsy!
This is immediately being linked with the (also ballsy) recent escape of notorious jewel thief Milan Poparic on July 25, said to be a member of the ‘Pink Panther’ gang. Interestingly, a documentary about the international jewel thieves called “Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers” is set to be released in the US on July 31. Too much of a coincidence??
This follows the two not-small jewelry thefts that happened during the Cannes Film Festival in May of this year. In one instance, the hotel room safe of a Chopard employee containing $1.4 million in jewels was ripped from the wall. A few day later came the second theft straight under the noses of 80 security guards at a star-studded De Grisogono party celebrating the company’s 20th year in business. A special collection for the milestone was modeled and put on display, then at the end of the night, a diamond necklace worth $2.6 million had vanished.
It is notable of course that the famous ‘To Catch a Thief’ movie, starring Cary Grant as a jewel thief, was largely filmed at Carlton Hotel, but this makes me think far more of Ocean’s Thirteen. Perhaps George Clooney & Co. can take some inspiration for another installment?
Moda Operandi is currently holding trunkshows for three fine jewelry designers and their Resort 2014 collections. Bochic (ending August 1) offers up a touch of the exotic with earrings featuring fossilized mammoth, jet and white jade. Dana Rebecca Designs (ending August 2) brings in the color with another all earring collection in the timeless combo of pink and green. Elise Dray (ending August 4) goes strictly diamonds with her signature graphic style.
Continuing on with the haute joaillerie collections presented in Paris this month, Van Cleef & Arpels decided to concentrate on interesting stones, rather than a particular theme. The result is Pierres de Caractère – Variations, a colorful and varied collection that shows off the technical abilities of the artisans who crafted them.
