Harry Winston’s Latest Collection

Harry Winston Sunflower Stud Earrings

Now that you’ve seen the image above, could you guess what flower this collection is celebrating? I know I wouldn’t get it right… Harry Winston’s latest launch is a new release of the Sunflower Collection. Yes, sunflower.

I don’t wish to take anything away from the loveliness of the collection as it is classic yet modern and clean, wear-for-the-rest-of-your-life kind of stuff and I certainly wouldn’t say no to any of it. What I can’t mentally escape from is that they don’t look like sunflowers at all. The video they released does nothing to help this as they overlay technical drawings of the pieces over an image of the flower and they clearly do not resemble each other. See the video at the end of the post. The design is one from the archives and the petals have actually been scaled down slightly, but given the technical abilities of the house it would have been nice to see a revamp that actually resembled the flower, like with marquise diamonds as the petals.

Christie’s May 15 Geneva Auction

Yet more records were broken at Christie’s May 15th auction in Geneva, including one made the day before!

Christies May 15 Geneva DiamondThe star of this sale was the truly remarkable 101.73 carat diamond, the largest D-color flawless diamond ever to be offered at auction, which unsurprisingly set the record for a colorless diamond at US$26,746,541. Harry Winston purchased the stone and it now has a name: the Winston Legacy. See a Christie’s video about the diamond here.

Christie's May 15 Geneva Red Diamond RingA new record was set for a red diamond with the sale of a ring featuring a 1.92 carat fancy red diamond for $$3,252,675.

Christie's May 15 Geneva Sapphire RingAlso in the colored stone category, a new record was set for price per carat of a sapphire with a ring featuring a 19.88 carat stone that sold for $3,484,142 ($181,276 per carat).

Christie's May 15 Geneva Pearl Earrings

And finally, the record for natural pearl earrings set on May 14th at Sotheby’s with Gina Lollobrigida’s stunners was broken one day later with sale of the above pair for $2,442,542.

Sotheby’s May 14 Geneva Auction

Sotheby’s May 14th auction in Geneva, featuring the jewels of Gina Lollobrigida, has broken two auction records.

Bulgari Gina Lollobrigida Pearl Earrings

Ms. Lollobrigida’s collection, which was being sold to raise money for stem cell research, brought in a total of US$4,962,122. Her exceptional pearl drop earrings broke the record for natural pearl earrings, selling for US$2,391,321. Interestingly, the record was previously held by Elizabeth Taylor’s earrings auctioned by Christie’s in December 2011.

Sothebys Geneva May 14 Yellow Diamond

A new record was also set for a yellow diamond at auction with the sale of the 74.53 carat jewel from the late 19th century . It sold for US$2,985,7750 setting the record for a yellow diamond and for price per carat of a yellow diamond at US$40,061.

Suzanne Belperron Brooch

Following the successful Sotheby’s May 2012 sale of the personal collection of Suzanne Belperron, a group of pieces made for her friend Cécyle Simon went up for auction. Belperron was one of the most influential female jewelers of the 20th century, and her distinctive style sets her apart, such as the piece pictured above, a chalcedony and diamond dress clip from 1955 called grappe de raisin or bunch of grapes.

You can practically smell the seawater when viewing the offerings of Sara Beltran. The former New York stylist, who decamped to India, travels the world’s beaches for inspiration. Seashells are cast in gold, shark teeth are strung together and diamonds are mixed in for just the right amount of luxe. Couldn’t you just imagine yourself in a breezy white dress wearing these pieces on your favorite stretch of sand? Or maybe in the city to remind you of that perfect sunset… Pieces from the Fall 2013 collection are available on Moda Operandi until May 19.
